Safety Tip: Safety is About Motivating People

Randy Rickels
Randy Rickels, Lead Trainer
of Production/Safety Officer
Shelter Systems Limited
Westminster, Maryland

Prioritizing safety is a continual process and everyone needs to be involved. Its success is dependent on motivating people. I like to think about safety like a good marketing campaign. If your campaign is not good, no one wants to buy your “product.” However, if your campaign is good, you get employee buy-in and everyone wants to be a part of it. In order for your workplace safety practices and policies to be effective it has to be respected and observed by everyone in the company, from the top down.  Remember, employees often listen with their eyes. If they see the company leadership owning, engaging and supporting safety, the chances are much better everyone else will, too.
