SBCA Initiates New ANSI Consensus Standard

SBCA has initiated the process for the development of an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) consensus standard and announces a call to solicit new consensus body members who wish to participate in the project committee. The goal of the project committee is to create the “Standard Requirements for the Testing, Design and Application of Foam Plastic Insulation Used as Sheathing for Building Enclosure Applications.”

Work will begin with FS 200.1 – GENERAL PROVISIONS, the first document in a “FS 200” series of coordinated standards or guidelines being developed to address key attributes and functions of foam plastic insulating sheathing related to its code-compliant integration into building envelope assemblies. The conceptual documents, taken in total, are intended to provide well-documented, code-compliant solutions and engineered pathways for qualification and appropriate use of foam sheathing materials. The ultimate purpose is to use the final standards to support appropriate, code-compliant use of foam sheathing by providing: (1) specification and design guidance to architects, engineers, and specifiers, (2) a technical basis for development of installation instructions for builders and installers, and (3) supporting data for plan review and inspection by building code and energy code officials. Consequently, some of the standards in this series of “FS 200” standards may eventually serve as code-referenced standards while others may remain as standardized design and application guidelines.

SBCA is currently seeking applications from key stakeholders who fall under user, producer and general interest categories. Individuals interested in applying to the project committee may contact staff or submit the FS 200 application form by May 31, 2017.

SBCA, an ANSI-Accredited Standards Developer, received the re-accreditation by ANSI’s Executive Standards Council (ExSC) for the revised operating procedures for documenting consensus on SBCA-sponsored American National Standards on July 15, 2015.

Every Committee and the Standards Secretariat of SBCA will function in accordance with “ANSI Essential Requirements” making sure that due process requirements are met for the development of any and all Standards. The announcement in ANSI’s Standards Action to solicit new consensus body members will be published on April 28, 2017.
