The two branches of Meek’s Lumber Company are now united under one CEO. Meek’s, a 2017 LBM Journal Entrepreneur of the Year, and one of the largest, privately-owned independent lumber and building material dealers, with over $325 million in annual sales, has announced Charlie Meek, a fourth generation Meek family member, will take over as CEO, effective immediately. The move solidifies and ongoing plan to unify management of Meek’s Midwest and West divisions. Carrie Meek, also a fourth generation family member, will take on a new role as Chairwoman of the Board. Charlie Meek will work closely with the board which also includes corporate CFO Michael Meek (fourth generation) and third-generation family leaders Bill and Terry Meek.
Meek’s operates in four states—Arkansas, Missouri, California and Nevada—and includes 46 full-service lumberyards and nearly a dozen ancillary locations including distribution centers, installed service outlets and more. The company had previously operated under two divisions with separate, decentralized management teams because of distinct geographic footprints and family business dynamics. Driving the decision to consolidate are retiring family members, obvious synergies, and the opportunity to take advantage of Meek’s size and geographic footprint.
Charlie Meek’s executive team, comprising all the key areas of management, combines to represent over 100+ years of experience with the company:
- Charlie Meek – CEO
- Mike Meek – CFO
- Matt Blair – President of West Coast Operations
- Eric Sachse – General Manager of Retail Operations, Midwest
- Tom Buckner – General Manager of Special Operations, Midwest
“I am very excited for Meek’s; this is an excellent management team, with complementary strengths. There is no doubt in my mind that the opportunity for this blended executive team to work closely with each other is going to produce outsized results. Collectively, we have worked very deliberately to develop and begin implementing a comprehensive strategy which will allow Meek’s to continue its growth as a leading building products supplier” said CEO Charlie Meek.
Carrie Meek added, “Combining our two divisions allows us to leverage opportunities as one company. I am thrilled we will have Charlie’s passion and extensive experience leading the charge. He has a great team who will share best practices from both divisions and the unanimous support of the board.”
As Meek’s heads towards its 100-year anniversary in 2019, growth and expansion plans are underway. According to Matt Blair, “The combination of increased building activity and streamlined operations makes this an excellent time for expansion. We are ready to grow and I’m excited.”
Despite the big moves, Meek’s remains locally focused. “Our strategy has always been, and will remain, rooted in the local communities we operate in,” said Eric Sachse. “I love seeing the old signs in our yards that say ‘we take you personally’ because this is what we are all about, and that part of our culture won’t change.”
