Madison, WI – Joe Kannapell (Senior Vice President, MiTek USA) was named the winner of the 2013 Dick Bowman Industry Enthusiast Award. Kannapell was nominated by SBCA members and BCMC exhibitors for the award, which honors an individual from an SBCA supplier member company who, over the years, has supported BCMC and the structural building components industry with enthusiasm and integrity in an unselfish and positive manner.
“Everyone who knows Joe Kannapell knows he is as selfless a guy as you could hope to meet,” said Joe Hikel, Vice President and COO of Shelter Systems Limited in Westminster, MD, who introduced the award. “His dedication to this industry and to his customers is without equal.”
Kannapell began his career with Hydro-Air Engineering in 1970, quickly rising to become Chief Structural Engineer. After working for many years with component manufacturers, Kannapell longed to run a plant of his own. After working in a truss plant in Texas, he was hired by Don Hershey as the Operations Manager of TruTrus in Phoenix. Still pursuing his dream to run a truss plant, Kannapell eventually moved on to become General Manager of Winchester Homes’ plant in Charlottesville, VA. When Winchester sold off their production facility, Kannapell returned to Hydro-Air, which was soon purchased by MiTek USA. Over the next 20 years, his sales territory grew to include the entire East Coast.
“Joe is an active and integral part of our SBCA of the Capital Area Chapter,” said Hikel. “He has an excellent grasp of the industry’s big picture and can be relied upon to provide a valuable perspective on whatever issue we are trying to tackle in our market.”
“What an honor, to be recognized by our customers,” said Kannapell in accepting the award. “I thank God for all of those who gave me so many wonderful opportunities in this industry over the last 40 years. I especially thank Hall-of-Fame recipients for whom I have worked, including Mike Conforti and Tom Manenti of MiTek, and Dave Chambers and Don Hershey of Imperial & TruTrus.”
